Florida clinic offers coupon in advertisement.
An Orlando abortion clinic has begun offering $50 discounts for abortions performed on Sundays through May 2012. The clinic, run by Dr. James Pendergraft, is located just down the street from the Florida Family Policy Council (FFPC).
“It’s obviously legal, but it’s sad to see the industry being so desperate as to entice women to take the lives of their unborn children on a Sunday,” said FFPC President John Stemberger. “The other aspect of this is that there’s a very aggressive sidewalk counseling movement in Florida, especially in Orlando, and the vast majority of those people are in church on Sunday. This could be an attempt to do an end-around those groups.”
Pendergraft, who performs late-term abortions, has had his medical license suspended and been jailed more than once. His clinic often uses a two-part chemical process for abortions — inserting the chemical on the first day to induce labor and having the woman return to the clinic on the second day to deliver a still-born child, Stemberger said.
“Oftentimes, we’ve learned, they’ll have a chaplain on hand to pray with the mother and do a burial, complete with a little toy baby they’ll give the mother,” he said. “It’s to make it all look spiritual. They’re not even saying it’s not a baby anymore.”
