According to a new report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nurses are the best paid of the top 10 most popular professions in the country. Regarding the industry’s largest segment, 2.6 million registered nurses topped the earnings list with an average annual salary of $68,000.
With employment of 105,780, nurse practitioners were one of the two largest new occupations in the 2010 Standard Occupational Classification system. According to the BLS, several nursing occupations earned high wages relative to the U.S. annual mean of $45,790, including nurse anesthetists with an annual mean wage of $154,390, $91,450 for nurse practitioners, and $91,070 for nurse midwives.
Healthcare and social assistance was the industry sector with the largest employment in May 2012. Registered nurses and nursing assistants were the largest detailed occupations in this sector, with about 2.3 million and 1.3 million jobs, respectively.
Almost 71 percent of registered nurses in the health care and social assistance sector were in hospitals, while nearly 63 percent of nursing assistants in the sector were employed by nursing and residential care facilities.
