My son Sergio and his friend Julio spent almost a year in prison for a crime they didn't commit. Last week, for the first time in 10 months, I saw my son Sergio and his best friend Julio outside of a prison wall. After more than 195,000 people, including you, signed my petition on Change.org calling on officials in Mexico and the United States to drop the wrongful trafficking charges and release both boys, they listened. Sergio and Julio are finally free.
Sergio and Julio were arrested in Mexico when drugs were found in our family’s car. But we bought that car at a U.S Customs Auction without the knowledge that those drugs were left behind by U.S. officials who had seized the car a year earlier. And because of this mistake, my son and his friend spent nearly a year in prison for a crime they didn't commit.
I began fighting for Sergio and Julio’s freedom on the day they were arrested. At times it felt like they would never be free -- but you and other supporters of my petition gave me hope. I want to thank each and every person that made the release of our sons possible. When I picked them up from jail, Sergio and Julio simply said, "We have no words to thank so many people for their support.”
