Grammy award winning artist Jody Watley has been at the forefront of some of the most groundbreaking trends and movements in modern pop culture. Jody ranks as one of MTV’s most nominated solo artists for her video “Real Love” with 7 nominations. One of her real-life loves is fitness.
After being out of the limelight, Jody wanted to continue to live healthy and exercise. One of her favorite ways to do that was do what came naturally: dance! She became the first artist to release a million selling video “Dance to Fitness“, which had not been achieved by a black woman or musician.
Consisting of light aerobics, Dance to Fitness features a gentle workout to the beat of Watley’s music. Some street-style choreography is also introduced. She thought of the project as more of a breakthrough than a marketing move. “There wasn’t one black person in a fitness video” she recalls “and I thought it would be great if I opened that door”.
