US President Ronald Reagan, commemorating the 750th anniversary of Berlin, addresses on June 12, 1987 the people of West Berlin at the base of the Brandenburg Gate, near the Berlin wall. Due to the amplification system being used, the President's words could also be heard on the Eastern (Communist-controlled) side of the wall.

6. In the hands of this soldier who felt that Saddam’s statue was in need of a makeover:

BAGHDAD, IRAQ: (FILES) A picture dated 09 April 2005 shows a US Marine covering the face of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's statue with the US flag in Baghdad's Firdos square. Tens of thousands of Shiites converged 09 April 2005 into the Square, that symbolised the all too brief euphoria over Saddam's downfall in the spring of 2003, for an anti-US protest to mark two years since the city fell to coalition troops. Francis Scott Key was inspired to write “The Star Spangled Banner” in 1812 after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Key was moved to write the words when, in the wake of the bombardment, he saw the flag still stood.

Today, the flag flies 24/7 at Fort McHenry:
