The Philadelphia Community of Leaders (PCOL), headed by Rahim Islam and Kenny Gamble, will resume a tradition of the Juneteenth celebration that first originated the abolishment of slavery in Texas in 1865. The all day affair will be held noon to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Sat., June 18.

“We want this event to grow with each year that passes,” Gamble said. “Historically, the celebration of Juneteenth’s focus has been education and self-improvement. It makes sense for an organization like PCOL to sponsor such an event.”
The parade, which will begin at Washington Square (formerly known as Congo Square), will culminate with a festival at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. It will feature drummers, floats, high stepping bands, stilt walkers and dancers that represents the African culture.

“We’re starting the parade at Washington Square because that used to be a market for sales of enslaved Africans,” said Michael Rashid, treasurer of PCOL culture committee. “We thought that would be a great starting point for Juneteenth because of the historical relevance. Mayor [Jim] Kenney will join a group of dignitaries who will step from the parade route and place a wreath at the President’s House in memory of the enslaved Africans whose home was there.

Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed a resolution recognizing Johnson House’s annual Juneteenth Festival, the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival! The resolution was lead by City Councilwoman Cindy Bass and co-sponsored by fellow City Councilpersons Helen Gym and Curtis Jones. The presentation of the resolution will occur today Thursday, June 16th in City Hall. Johnson House Historic Site’s Juneteenth Festival celebrates it’s 10th anniversary on Saturday June 18 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 6300 block of Germantown Ave. with a Black Colleges Matter celebration and Unsung Hero Award.

Black Colleges Matter: Adisa Iwa–Morehouse College graduate and screenwriter/producer for multiple hit television shows including Law & Order: SVU, NYPD Blue and Dark Angel–joins Albert Butler, former WURD AM radio host and journalist, and other Historically Black College and University (HBCU) graduates to celebrate the history and significance of education for African Americans since the civil war. This conversation will also examine the historic partnership between African Americans and Quakers in the establishment of these institutions such as the Institute for Colored Youth, known today as Cheyney University; and their current struggle for survival:

“Every year we engage the community in a conversation that focuses on a relevant and pressing social issue. This year we want to highlight HBCUs. The Johnson House has a unique connection to Cheyney University. The abolitionist Johnson family were active in many aspects of black life post the civil war and funded a variety of causes: Israel H. Johnson was a donor and manager of The Institute for Colored Youth that was disbanded to create what is now Cheyney University… like the Johnsons, Johnson House Historic Site continues to be a beacon of light for critical social and civic issues. Johnson House has been a safe place and remains a relevant safe heaven for the community to have these discussions.”
